Nelson House: emergency shelter, support, and advocacy for women and children escaping violence.

A safe place to begin again.

About Us

Our Mission & Vision

Our Mission

Nelson House is dedicated to providing women and their children shelter, support, and information, so they can take steps to end violence in their lives

Our Vision

At Nelson House, our efforts aim toward a community where all women and their children live free from violence—with dignity, autonomy, and possibility.

What We Do

Nelson House operates a 15-bed emergency shelter (11 private rooms) at a confidential location where residents stay roughly three months on average while we support them in finding safe, stable housing.

Through our Transitional Support Program, we extend counselling, advocacy, and community support to women and children outside shelter.

Our services are free of charge, confidential, and inclusive (interpretive services available).

Who We Serve

Nelson House offers services for self-identified women, transgender and gender non-conforming people, and their children as they experience or flee violence.

A mother and her teenage daughter are engaged in a conversation in the living room. The mother is seated on a grey sofa, wearing a bright orange sweater, while the daughter, dressed in a striped top, leans in attentively. Sunlight filters into the warmly decorated room, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere

Support & Advocacy

We provide emotional support, goal setting, and safety planning while helping residents navigate legal systems, housing applications, immigration support, medical referrals, and more.

Practical Supports & Essentials

We provide essentials: new bedding, clothing, school supplies, toiletries, baby items, prescription help (if not covered), and more.

Children & Youth Programs

We offer support for children and parents impacted by violence, such as aid in educational and custody processes, trauma-informed childcare, and activity programming for youth.

I never thought I could feel safe again, until Nelson House opened its doors.
