Growing Up Safe: Supporting Families Through Healing and Hope

At Crossroads Children’s Mental Health Centre (CCMHC), we believe every child deserves
to feel safe, supported, and loved. That’s why, through the support of the Ministry of Children,
Community and Social Services, we created Growing Up Safe, a program designed to help
children and families heal after experiencing gender-based violence (GBV).

When families face trauma, the road to recovery can feel overwhelming. Our program brings
together proven approaches that focus on emotional well-being, building trust, and
strengthening the bond between children and their caregivers. These approaches include:

  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): Helping children process
    and cope with difficult experiences.
  • Circle of Security (COS): Supporting caregivers in creating a secure, nurturing
    environment.
  • Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS): Teaching families skills to manage challenges
    together.

By combining these methods, Growing Up Safe promotes healing, emotional regulation, and stronger family connections.

Support Every Step of the Way

We know that recovery doesn’t happen overnight. That’s why our program works hand-in-hand
with local GBV shelters to provide care from the moment of crisis through to stable housing. This ensures families receive consistent, compassionate support during one of the most challenging times in their lives.

Our dedicated team—including Child and Family Therapists and Child and Youth Workers—offers on-site treatment at shelter locations. This means families can access help in a safe, familiar environment without additional stress.

Community Collaboration for Lasting Change

Healing is a community effort. Through joint training and collaboration, CCMHC and our shelter partners are building a coordinated response to GBV—one that prioritizes both immediate safety and long-term well-being.

We are proud to partner with Interval House, Maison d’amitié, Nelson House, Chrysalis House and Harmony House. Together, we’re creating a network of care that helps families feel safe, supported, and hopeful for the future.

How You Can Help

When we work together, we can make a difference. Whether by spreading the word, volunteering, or supporting local shelters, your involvement matters. Every action brings us closer to a community where children and families can grow up safe.
